How the map draws it

Lit as a camera exposed for its own sunlight would show it · seen from far off it is a light at its computed brightness: the glow is how a camera records a point too bright to resolve · its air is drawn 1.5 times thicker than it is so that it shows at this size, and the colour of its haze is illustrative · on a larger screen its relief is from the heights Mars Global Surveyor’s laser altimeter measured, drawn 5 times steeper and taller than they are so that a low Sun shows them: the shadows Olympus Mons and the canyon walls throw are that many times too long.
