Choose your place
This page starts from the place you set in the map, or a city guessed from your time zone. It does not ask your browser for a position unless you press the button.
The trip that takes every planet in turn, then shows where to look from your street.
How to read it
A planet is listed when it climbs at least 10° (Mercury and Venus, which never stray far from the Sun, 5°) while the sky is dark: between the end of evening twilight and the start of morning twilight, with the Sun more than 6° below the horizon. Magnitude is brightness: the lower, the brighter; 0 is a bright star, −2 is brighter than any star. Planets do not twinkle much and shine with a steady light.
Measured or computed? The positions are computed from the planets' own orbits (Astronomy Engine) for the instant and the place; nothing is fetched. Brightness is a model of the planet's phase and distance.
